Join me for an evening of social stitching. Embroider your own cap with traditional 'blackwork' patterns.

Design your own custom cap using an embroidery technique made popular by the Tudors! Blackwork embroidery uses simple stitches to create beautifully intricate geometric patterns. Working from templates, we will go step-by-step to stitch our caps. You can even customise your colour and motifs to suit your style.
Whether you're new to stitching or an experienced maker, this workshop will guide you through each stage in a fun, relaxed setting. No previous experience needed, and all tools and materials provided. Just bring yourself and your creativity!

WHAT WILL I DO?
Grab a drink
Bring your friends, grab a drink and settle down for a fun evening of social stitching.
Choose your colour scheme
Black-on-white, or white-on-black? Tudor blackwork used black silk on natural linen. You can stay traditional or switch it up for a more modern look.
Choose your patterns
Choose a combination of side panel patterns and central motifs to customise your cap. Patterns will range in difficulty so you can choose your level of challenge!
Stitch!
Attach your template and follow the step-by-step guides to build up your patterns.
Dissolve your template
Wash your cap in water to dissolve the template. You have now completed your blackwork embroidery cap!
WHAT WILL I TAKE AWAY?
One cotton cap (black or white) with two panels of hand-stitched geometric patterns in a contrasting colour (white of black). An additional central motif is optional.
MATERIALS
Cotton cap (OCS 100 certified, metal buckle)
Cotton embroidery threads
Dissolvable embroidery stabiliser template (biodegradable PVA)
TECHNIQUES
BLACKWORK
Blackwork is a style of embroidery made popular in the 16th century. It is rumoured to have been brought to England by Henry the Eighth's first wife Catherine of Aragon. It was often worked in black silk on linen, but other colours were also used. Many different styles of blackwork developed. The most popular uses regular geometric patterns to fill outlined shapes or create detailed sketch-like shading.
