TECHNIQUES

Beadwork
Beadwork embroidery - attaching beads to fabric as decoration - dates back thousands of years. There are early examples from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Native American cultures. Glass seed beads were developed by the Romans, and mechanised in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) in the 19th century, when beadwork embroidery became popular for decorating garments and accessories.
Goldwork
Goldwork - using precious metal threads and wires to decorate cloth - has also been around for thousands of years and is thought to have originated in China. Modern European goldwork materials and techniques date to the middle ages, when they were mainly used to decorate religious garments and fabrics.
