TECHNIQUES

Hand Sewing

Humans have been hand sewing garments, coverings and accessories for over 30,000 years. Initially using needles made from bone, horn or antler and thread made from animal sinew. Hand sewing remains an extremely useful skill, and a low cost and mindful craft.

Silk Painting

Silk manufacture and silk painting originated in China, with the earliest known silk painting dating from 165 BCE. The Chinese developed a highly intricate and detailed style of silk painting called Gongbi, as well as the more stylistic Shuimo technique. Silk painting spread across Asia, with different regions developing their own styles and techniques. From here silk production spread to the Byzantine and Arabic Empires, and was brought to Europe by the Crusades. These silk scrunchies use the modern European technique of 'wet-on-wet' silk painting imitating a water-colour effect.
